ARIZONA'S PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS LAG in WORKFORCE READINESS

The Workforce Readiness Gap

Arizona lags most U.S. states in the quality of its public schools as evidenced by the following  facts:

  1. Arizona's per pupil education funding is currently 14% below 2008 levels and lags every other state, except Oklahoma, Idaho & Utah.
  2. Education Week ranked Arizona 44th among all U.S. states in its 2017 Quality Counts report, with Arizona receiving a grade of D+, compared with the national average of C.

Arizona's public school graduates are therefore often ill-prepared for a post-secondary education and careers.

In contrast to the state of public education,  the American Legislative Council ranked Arizona's economic outlook  #5 among  U.S. states. This anomalous situation has created a workforce readiness gap: Arizona's high school graduates are  poorly positioned  to capitalize on the burgeoning local job market,  compared with  the majority of  their national counterparts.  Students' prospects for securing these  jobs are even more dire among Arizona's Title 1 schools, as a large percentage of these students live at or near poverty.
